Bharatpur Ka Surajmal

When Aurangzeb's Mughal administration and Ahmad Shah Abdali's Afghan forces moved through the heartland around Delhi, Mathura, Agra, and Bharatpur, they met sustained, effective resistance they had not anticipated. The Jat chieftains of the region — led by figures from Raja Churaman through Surajmal to Jawahar Singh — not only held their ground but repeatedly forced the invaders to retreat. They seized the fort at Agra and other strongholds that most readers have been taught to regard as permanently in Mughal hands.

Muneesh Tripathi's research-based account recovers this chapter of Indian history that mainstream historiography has largely overlooked. Working through a connected narrative that runs from the early eighteenth century through the wars against Abdali, the book traces how a regional martial community built a power that could challenge the dominant forces of the age.
