Overview

In the 1960s, before CDs existed and before digital programming was conceivable, a Hindustani vocalist named Pandit Sharada Prasad Buwa and a watchmaker named Zameer spent fifteen years building something that had never been built before: a clock that sang. Buwa came from a lineage of music healers who served in royal courts; his vision was to carry the therapeutic power of ragas into ordinary homes, one prahar at a time. The solution he and Zameer eventually achieved — a LP jukebox connected to a massive wall clock, configured to play twenty-four records in sequence, one at each hour — was as improbable as it was precise.

Pravin Godkhindi, himself a world-renowned flautist, tells this story with the authority of someone who understands both the musicological logic and the human cost of Buwa's obsession. The novel weaves in a quiet love story, the bitter rivalries of the classical music world, and the arrival of a neuroscientist who wants to use the clock to treat patients — each thread illuminating a different facet of what it means to believe that sound can heal. The clock itself, the only one ever made, still stands in Buwa's gurukul.

Belonging to a lineage of music healers who served in the courts of various kings, an inspired Buwa creates such a clock to take classical music and healing to every house. The novel is set in the 1960s, a time when there were no CDs and programming was unheard of. Buwa and Zameer spend fifteen years of their lives pursuing this dream. They eventually succeed in connecting a LP jukebox to a huge wall clock, with the jukebox configured to play the 24 LPs sequentially, one at the turn of every hour. This singing clock, the only one ever, now resides in Buwa's gurukul, where he teaches music to devout students. The experience of Buwa and his singing clock takes you through heartwarming twists and turns-a sweet love story, competition between contemporaries, a neuroscientist desirous of using the clock to treat his patients, and an unexpected climax. लेखक परिचय: जीवन के शुरुआती दौर में ही प्रवीण गोडखिंडी को बाँसुरी से प्यार हो गया। वे सिर्फ 3 साल के थे, जब उन्होंने बाँसुरी अपने हाथों में ले ली। इसके बाद 6 साल की उम्र में तो उन्होंने अपनी पहली मंचीय प्रस्तुति दे डाली। फिर आगे, पिता और गुरु पंडित वेंकटेश गोडखिंडी तथा विद्वान अनूर अनंत कृष्ण शर्मा के सांगीतिक मार्गदर्शन में उन्होंने तमाम उपलब्धियाँ हासिल कीं। कई पुरुस्कार और सम्मान प्राप्त किए। इनमें से कुछ उपलब्धियाँ तो पहली-पहली बार उन्हीं के खाते में आईं। जैसे- वह भारत के पहले बाँसुरी वादक हैं, जिन्होंने 8 फीट लम्बी 'कन्ट्राबास' बाँसुरी बजाई। यह बाँसुरी अमूमन धातु की होती है और मन्द्र सप्तक से भी लगभग दोगुने नीचे के सुरों पर बजती है। वे देश के पहले बाँसुरी वादक हैं, जो सांगीतिक प्रस्तुतियों के दौरान चक्रीय श्वसन (सर्कुलर ब्रीदिंग) तकनीक का उपयोग करते सुर लगाते हैं। उन्होंने नए वाद्य यंत्र भी आविष्कृत किए हैं। जैसे- फ्लूटार, आल्टो बाँसुरी, दिव्य बाँसुरी आदि। प्रवीण गोडखिंडी हिन्दुस्तानी बाँसुरी विधा में आकाशवाणी के शीर्ष श्रेणी (टॉप ग्रेड) के कलाकार हैं। उस्ताद जाकिर हुसैन तथा डॉक्टर बालामुरली कृष्ण जैसे दिग्गज कलाकारों के साथ अपनी कला के प्रदर्शन का उन्हें सौभाग्य प्राप्त है। प्रवीण जी को अब तक कई पुरुस्कारों और सम्मानों से नवाजा जा चुका है। 'सुरमणि', 'नाद-निधि', 'सुर सम्राट', 'कला प्रवीण', 'आर्यभट्ट' और श्रृंगेरी शारदा पीठ तथा उडुपी श्रीकृष्ण मठ से 'आस्थान संगीत विद्वान' जैसे सम्मान इनमें प्रमुख हैं। उन्हें हाल ही में तुमकुरु विश्वविद्यालय से डॉक्टरेट की मानद उपाधि दी गई है। उन्होंने दो कन्नड़ फिल्मों- 'बेरु' और 'विमुक्ति' के निर्माण में भी सहयोग किया है। इन फिल्मों के लिए संगीत रचना भी उन्होंने ही की है। इन दोनों फिल्मों को क्रमश: 52वें तथा 56वें राष्ट्रीय पुरुस्कार से नवाजा गया है। विश्व स्तर पर भी प्रवीण गोडखिंडी ने सम्मान प्राप्त किए हैं। इनमें वर्ष 2016 का 'बेस्ट कन्टेम्पररी इंस्ट्रूमेन्टल एलबम- यूएसए' प्रमुख है। इसके अलावा एक दर्जन से अधिक देशों में वे अपनी सांगीतिक प्रस्तुतियाँ दे चुके हैं। इन देशों में अमेरिका, कनाडा, स्पेन, बेल्जियम, जर्मनी, मस्कट, कतर, हॉलैंड, दुबई, अर्जेन्टीना, पुर्तगाल आदि शामिल हैं। वहाँ उन्होंने एकल प्रस्तुतियाँ तो दी ही हैं, फ्यूजन संगीत के कार्यक्रम भी किए हैं। प्रवीण गोडखिंडी कर्नाटक के उस धारवाड़ इलाके से ताल्लुक रखते हैं, जिसे हिन्दुस्तानी संगीत की 'सिद्धपीठ' कहा जाता है। जहाँ से पंडित भीमसेन जोशी, गंगूबाई हंगल और कुमार गन्धर्व जैसे महानतम् संगीतकार निकले हैं। प्रवीण जी ने शुरुआती तौर पर पिता जी से किराना घराने की परम्परागत गायन शैली में बाँसुरी बजाना सीखी। लेकिन आगे चलकर उन्होंने अपनी अलग शैली विकसित कर ली। इसमें उन्होंने गायकी के संग ही भरपूर पकड़ के साथ गतकारी और तंत्रकारी का भी मिश्रण किया है। प्रवीण जी भारतीय संगीत से जुड़े ऐसे परिवार से सम्बन्ध रखते हैं, जिसकी तीन पीढ़ियों के सदस्य बाँसुरी बजा रहे हैं। इनमें पहले बाँसुरी वादक रहे उनके पिता पंडित श्री वेंकटेश गोडखिंडी जी, दूसरे वे खुद और तीसरे उनके पुत्र षड्ज गोडखिंडी। एक मंच पर, एक परिवार की तीन पीढ़ियों के इन तीनों बाँसुरीवादकों ने मिलकर अपनी कला का प्रदर्शन भी किया है। यह भी सम्भवत: देश में ऐसा इकलौता मामला है। इसके अलावा प्रवीण जी ने 'फ्यूजन संगीत' का अपना एक बैंड (वाद्यवृन्द) भी बनाया है। उसका नाम है, 'कृष्ण'। अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर के कई नामी वाद्यवृन्दों तथा राष्ट्रीय स्तर के कई कलाकारों के साथ प्रवीण जी का यह बैंड अपनी सांगीतिक प्रस्तुतियाँ दे चुका है। प्रवीण जी ने विशेष योग्यता के साथ इलेक्ट्रिकल तथा इलेक्ट्रॉनिक इंजीनियरिंग की पढ़ाई की है। सम्बन्धित अकादमिक उपाधियाँ हासिल की हैं। उनके इस उपन्यास 'प्रहर' का पहला संस्करण कन्नड़ भाषा में फरवरी-2022 में प्रकाशित हुआ था। उसका शीर्षक है, 'प्रहर : हाडुवा गड़ियारा'। इसके बाद अंग्रेजी भाषा में पहला संस्करण वर्ष 2023 में आया, 'प्रहर : द सिंगिंग क्लॉक' शीर्षक से। और अब, जनवरी- 2025 में हिन्दी भाषा में यह 'प्रहर : कहानी, 8 प्रहर का राग-संगीत गाने वाली घड़ी की' शीर्षक से प्रकाशित किया गया है।
