Overview

Suburban Calcutta in the late 1990s produced three inseparable friends — Dhananjay, Durjaya, and Daksh Ray, the DRs — each pointed toward something remarkable. Dhananjay was writing algorithms when the world was panicking about Y2K; Durjaya had local celebrity for his football; Daksh was climbing through the county cricket circuit. They were prodigies in waiting, holding each other up through the usual chaos of growing up.

Then 2014 arrives, and someone shoots Dhananjay.

Amlan Ray's debut novel uses the long arc of friendship to ask what happens when fate intervenes violently in lives that were already in motion. Where is Durjaya when it matters most? How does Daksh carry the weight? The answers the book provides are less about plot resolution than about what the bonds formed in youth are actually made of — and whether they hold when everything else gives way.

Three friends-Dhananjay Ray, Durjaya Rayand Daksh Ray (the DRs)-are growing up together in suburban Calcutta in the late 1990s at the turn of 21st century. Potential prodigies, they hold each other’s hands through highs and lows. Dhananjay, not yet a matriculate, is working on an algorithm, when the world was worried about Y2K. Durjay is a minor celebrity with his football skills, while Daksh is coming up in cricket through the county circuit. But something sinister happens in 2014. Dhananjay is shot at. Will he survive? How will Daksh handle this? Where is Durjaya? And what does destiny have in store for these three friends? Do they even have an idea? The book provides the answers.
