Overview

Esther Dhanraj spent twenty-five years inside evangelical Christianity. She left not in anger but through scholarship — a Master of Divinity in the United States that was meant to deepen her faith, and that instead returned her to the Hindu traditions she had been converted away from. Her memoir traces that journey without sentimentality and without score-settling.

What makes this account rare is its precision. Dhanraj is not writing from the outside; she earned the theological training that allows her to engage Christianity's claims directly. Now Director of Advancement at Hindu University of America, she works to build a generation of scholars who can articulate dharmic perspectives in Western academic and media spaces. The memoir examines conversion as a lived experience — the social pressures, the internal reckonings, and what it means to claim, consciously and deliberately, an identity that was given up before the choice could be made.

-:ABOUT THE BOOK:-

Esther Dhanraj spent a quarter of a century in evangelical faith before an unflinching journey of scholarship and self-inquiry, which began while earning her Master of Divinity in the United States, led her back to her Hindu roots. In her current role as Director of Advancement at Hindu University of America, she is part of a global effort to nurture scholars who will become strong voices for dharma in Western academia, classrooms, and media. A writer, speaker, and mentor, she exposes the realities of religious conversion and champions a Hindu renaissance. Her memoir, Unbaptized: Why I Left Christianity and Returned to My Roots, is a searing, hopeful account of faith, identity, and the courage to return home.

Unbaptized is a Molotov cocktail of revelation. Once a fervent advocat for the Christian gospel, Esther now wields her theological precision to dissect the psychological manipulation, doctrinal rigidity, and spiritual coercion fueling India's conversion machinery.

-Anand Ranganathan, Author and Scientist

What makes Unbaptized especially powerful is Esther's dual perspective: that of a lived insider's experience and that of a trained scholar of Biblical studies. This allows her to lay bare the exclusivist structures of Christian theology while contrasting then with the inclusive and liberating vision of Sanatana Dharma.

-Raj Vedam, Indic Scholar and Public Speaker

It is a very rare testimony of the disillusionment in a religion sold to seekers as the key to their salvation.

-Koenraad Elst, Scholar and Anthor

The beauty of this book is that it isn't just a memoir, it is also a guide and provides solutions to those who are still caught up in the hole and would want to experience the whole. Esther has also prescribed a plan of action to create a safety net around our vulnerable people and communities. I would commend this book to everyone who wishes to craft his arguments against the Church rhetoric and those who would like to work on the ground to root out the menace of conversions.

-Sanjay Dixit, Founder, Jaipur Dialogues

A must read to understand the ugly underbelly of the Evangeliçal hell-hole.

 -Neeraj Atri, Author and Speaker

If there were still philosophical debates in India, like in the time of Adi Shankara, Esther Dhanraj arguing in favor of Sanatana Dharma would be declared the winner against the Christian theologians.

-Maria Wirth, Author and Indic Scholar

Few get an opportunity to live so many lives in one, as Esther Dhanraj has.

-Kalyan Viswanathan, President, Hindu University of America

:-ABOUT THE AUTHOR-: Esther Dhanraj is a former Christian who spent over two decades in evangelical faith after converting from her Hindu Brahmin roots as a teenager. While pursuing her Master of Divinity in the United States, her faith began to unravel. What started as academic inquiry soon became a personal reckoning as her scholarship, lived experience, and relentless questioning dismantled the very belief system she was preparing to defend. Her return to Sanātana Dharma was not a simple homecoming but a rigorous intellectual, cultural, and spiritual reawakening. Today, she speaks and writes with candor about religious conversion, the psychological and cultural toll of leaving one's native traditions, and the richness and resilience of Hindu thought. Esther mentors Hindu families who seek her guidance when a loved one is drawn into the influence of conversion efforts within their circles. In her current role as Director of Advancement at Hindu University of America (HUA), Esther is part of a global effort to nurture scholars who will become strong voices for dharma in Western academia, classrooms, and media. Through this work, HUA is creating space for Hindu studies in the modern world, and Esther is actively engaged in advancing that mission. Her memoir, Unbaptized: Why I Left Christianity and Returned to My Roots, chronicles her three-decade journey from devout Christian to unapologetic Hindu, offering both a deeply personal story and a wake-up call for her community. She spends her time between India and the United States and travels widely for lectures, panels, and grassroots advocacy.
