The expedition was conceived in the spirit of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav — India's seventy-fifth independence anniversary and its 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat' aspiration — and Mani's chronicle of it becomes a meditation on what that national idea looks like at ground level, when young people from across the country find themselves moving through the same landscapes together. Each destination adds a layer to a composite portrait of a country that is easier to declare unified than to actually experience as such.
For those who believe travel is a form of civic education, this book makes the argument through example rather than assertion.
