Mahabharata's ethics on Dharma, loyalty, and identity translated into real-life guidance for modern teenagers.

Overview

The Mahabharata has survived for millennia not because it is ancient but because the questions it asks — how do you balance duty to family against duty to society? what does it mean to be a loyal friend without betraying your own values? — do not age. Bharat Thakker's approach in this book is to take those questions seriously for teenagers, who face versions of them every day.

Rather than retelling the epic's plot, Thakker extracts its ethical and relational teachings and translates them into the context of modern adolescent life. Concepts like Dharma, Khandan, and Sanskar are not presented as abstract ideals but as frameworks with practical application — illustrated through situations teenagers actually encounter: competing loyalties, peer pressure, the pressure to succeed, the meaning of home. The book's grounding in recognisable teenage experience is deliberate; the aim is self-discovery through a text that has always been about self-discovery.

For families who want the next generation to engage with Hindu philosophy rather than simply inherit it, this offers a structured, conversation-starting way in.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Mahabharata for the Young Minds is not another retelling of the ancient Indian Epic. It's a unique exploration that connects our profound Hindu values to our modern context. The Mahabharata provides timeless insights into Dharma (righteousness), helping us understand our obligations in various roles and relationships. For instance, it offers guidance on balancing one's duty towards family and society. Moreover, the Epic's portrayal of relationships-between siblings, spouses, and friends-sheds light on modern society's dynamics of human connection. Exploring concepts like Khandan (honourable roots) and Sanskar (core values), the book shows values we can apply daily. The book's practical examples and discussions will satisfy your curiosity about our heritage and engage you in self-discovery. For instance, it gives examples of maintaining friendships while staying true to one's values and offers a roadmap for navigating life's challenges. These examples are based on real-life situations that teenagers can relate to, making the book's teachings more practical and applicable. This book is not only valuable but essential for every home. It can enrich the lives of teens and families, fostering a deeper understanding of Hindu values and culture.

Bharat Thakker is spending his retirement years in London writing on his research on Hindu Thoughts and Epics, playing golf, listening to Indian music or shopping with his wife Smita. Born in Kolkata, he studied in St Xavier's School and is a rank holding Chartered Accountant. In a career spanning over 30 years, he has led businesses in Steel, Financial Services, Real Estate and Telecom Software in India, UK and UAE. In his travels across Europe, Asia, Africa and Central America, he noticed their rich heritage of culture linked to their civilisations. This roused his interest in the Epic called the Mahabharata. He wanted to fathom the power that there must be in the 100,000 verses of the Epic when its 700 verses called the Bhagwat Gita have engaged countless thinkers/preachers and continues to mesmerise people around the world. Based on his research backed writing, the Mahabharata will appear as a book on life, real and for once believable and relevant.
