The Sorceror of Sistan

A historical fantasy set in 682 CE Afghanistan, where two warriors race to save the last Hindu kingdom from Islamic armies and ancient evil.

Overview

In 682 CE, the Hindu kingdom of Kapisa stood as the last significant Hindu realm in Afghanistan, its capital Kamboja enriched by Silk Route trade and positioned at the crossroads of civilisations. Then the Islamic armies pushing out of Persia broke through. Kamboja fell. Famine followed. Refugees crowded the new capital. The treasury ran dry. What remained of the kingdom hung by whatever two warriors -- Indrajit and Rustom -- could hold together.

Yogeshwar Y Shastri's historical fantasy picks up at that moment of maximum danger. When the two warriors intercept a secret Arab message on a blood-soaked battlefield in the badlands of Afghanistan, their mission becomes a race against time: deliver the message to Kapisa before the forces arrayed against them can stop it. The path runs through demons, ghosts, and sorcerers -- the ancient evil power of Sistan -- as well as the more familiar dangers of war and treachery.

The novel draws on a real historical crisis, the near-extinction of the last Hindu polity in Afghanistan, and sets against it an adventure that does not soften the stakes. Courage here is not rhetorical. It operates against colossal odds and inside a world where the supernatural is as dangerous as any army.
