Overview

Hitesh Goenka has had migraines most of his life. He has tried various things, including medication. At some point he stopped waiting for a cure and started paying attention to the condition itself — what triggers it, what worsens it, what makes it briefly bearable, and what the experience is actually like from inside a skull that seems to have its own hostile agenda.

Anything But This is the record of that attention. Part memoir, part practical guide, part poetry collection, the book moves through the many faces of a migraineur's life: the sleepless nights, the movie theatre panic, the cognitive fog, the reckless decisions to drive or trek anyway, the dark jokes that are funnier because the pain is real. Goenka gives each manifestation of his condition a name — The Irritable One, The Forgetful One, The Exhausted One — and treats them with a self-deprecating humour that never softens the difficulty. The second half lays out a step-by-step framework: identifying triggers, building preventive habits, distinguishing causes from symptoms, and reaching a working acceptance.

For the many who live with migraines, this is company — written by someone who genuinely knows what they are going through.
